Font far too big...are they trying to use less words
pca_Fil - 23 June 2008 - 11:55am<p>Not impressed at all. Apart from less pages the new font is so big the number of words per page seems to have dropped dramatically. I liked PC Answers as it tended to go into depth about topics, now it does not seem to do that. </p>
<p>I'm someone who used to like to have a good read of the magazine, not a 'flicker'. This new look just has too little information in the articles. A shame really as the topics chosen are good. The pictures are too big.</p>
<p>In summary...glitzy maybe but now appears aimed at a lesser technically minded audience. Dumbed down. </p>
<p>Please please please change the font back to the previous one, get the depth back in the articles....or just go back to the better older design.</p>
new PCAnswers
Isitme - 23 June 2008 - 1:59pm<p>I couldn't agree more!!!!!! They have wrecked my favourite mag. :x </p>
<p>When I leafed through it, I had to look twice at the cover, I thought I had picked up one of my wife's crappy gossip mags.</p>
<p>It is ruined, my subs are due for renewal soon, I don't think they will be.</p>
new PCAnswers
pca_Graculus - 23 June 2008 - 3:35pm<p>I have bought every issue since No.4 - this "improved and better than ever !" format version is the worst one I've seen.</p>
<p>The DVD has 90 mins of video tutorials - I'd far rather have a random Linux distro to have a look at !</p>
<p>It has definitely been dumbed down, there is no real depth to the articles, and with bigger graphics and the reduced number of pages, IMHO it is not worth the cover price any more, and I shall be cancelling my quarterly Direct Debit as soon as possible.</p>
new PCAnswers
pca_len - 23 June 2008 - 5:57pm<p>I don't like the new magazine and I regret the loss of the old disc contents. Another subscription about to be cancelled. Can anyone suggest a magazine like the old PC Answers?</p>
new PCAnswers
geofftswin - 23 June 2008 - 6:06pm<p>Indeed - it came through the door today and I couldn't think what it was as it felt much thinner. 12 pages thinner in fact, and by my counting, 5 pages more adverts than issue 185. Still the same cover price though which seems wrong.</p>
<p>Never mind, cancelled my subscription last month, so hopefully won't have any more issues coming through the door.</p>
<p>As to the content - it did feel a lot more "in-brief" than in the past.</p>
<p>As for the disc, maybe if it was Computer Active which is definitely aimed at a beginner audience, the videos may be the right approach, but I thought PCA was a little more technically minded.</p>
new PCAnswers
pca_ronnie - 23 June 2008 - 6:35pm<p>For me the jury is still out. Previous revamps have started poorly but regained their usual quality.</p>
<p>My question is: what's with all this beardy stuff? Or do you only have to be called Nick for this (apologies to Tanya who I'm sure doesn't have facial hair!)</p>
new PCAnswers
pca_Emmadw - 23 June 2008 - 7:34pm<p>I, too, wasn't overly impressed when I first looked at it; however, given that I've just got a Windows Vista Laptop at work, that I'm trying to get to grips with, I think that the videos could be useful to me! </p>
<p>I have to say that I've rarely used the software that comes with it, so swapping software for videos isn't that much of an issue for me. </p>
<p>I do, agree, though, with those that have said that it seems to be "dumbing down" a bit; I've thought for a while that Computer Active, PC Answers & .NET is overkill, I've an idea that it might be PCA that suffers, though I've a while left yet on the subscription to change my mind!</p>
New PC Answers.
pca_albo - 23 June 2008 - 8:14pm<p>My new mag arrived this morning as well so In a word, Dreadful. Cheap and nasty. How can you do this to my favourite mag? In issue 186 in the ad pushing the new format "Bigger help desk section" rubbish! in 186 there are 20 odd questions, in the new edition about 11, I make that a reduction. And the font. enlarge the font halve the content by the looks of it. I have a suggestion for the Help me to buy... feature, Help Me To Buy A Real PC Answers Mag. And , where's Dan di Nicolo?</p>
new PCAnswers
Briano - 23 June 2008 - 11:52pm<p>Haven't seen it yet, tho' am doubtful about whether I'll buy after reading the above comments. </p>
<p>I used to have a subscription but cancelled it when they started sending me red letter bills, demanding payment on the envelope, but inside stated I had 2 months left on my subs (which I had). Just felt like I was being pressurised in to renewing my subs. Even had the postman (a friend) slagging me off that I hadn't paid my bills !! I didn't renew. Only bought issues after that when they had a lot in that appealed to me. </p>
<p>Having said all that, this was a magazine that I have really enjoyed reading from edge to edge in the past. I hope the new format hasn't ruined that.</p>
<p>Maybe like ronnie says, give it an issue or two to settle, then maybe I'll check it out.</p>
new PCAnswers
PS - 24 June 2008 - 8:23am<p>Agree totally with the adverse comments.</p>
<p>Absolutely dreadful and guess who's just renewed his subscription! </p>
<p>Sales will suffer and then publication will cease or be amalgamated with another mag.</p>
<p>Why, oh why, must they feel the need to change a working formula?</p>
new PCAnswers
pca_Burn-IT - 24 June 2008 - 9:41am<p>I think they have been heavily influenced by MS in that they produce both Windows Vista and Windows XP, which are both "glossy" type magazines.</p>
new PCAnswers
King_Drax_I - 24 June 2008 - 2:09pm<p>I agree - my first impression involved racing to the nearest toilet and shoving my fingers down my throat.</p>
<p>However, I'll give the mag a chance, but I don't like that there's not lots of really good free software - even one from Serif would have been welcome!</p>
<p>Geez, what a mess..... :(</p>
new PCAnswers
King_Drax_I - 24 June 2008 - 2:13pm<p>.... I'd also say that this makes me want to demand that capital punishment be brought back in.</p>
<p>In other words, someone needs to be shot for this.</p>
<p>I'll give it one or two more issues and then I will cancel my subscription if things don't improve.</p>

pca_Wierdstone - 24 June 2008 - 7:04pm<p>Haven't seen the new one yet so can't make an informed comment.<br />
Reading the posts so far I now know why Simon left.</p>
new PCAnswers
geofftswin - 24 June 2008 - 9:18pm<p>and what's more, no one from PCA has yet popped in to defend the new look. A couple of years ago, you could have pretty much guaranteed an appearance from the staff before readers got their hands on the magazine, but not any more.</p>
Thanks
Nick Veitch - 27 June 2008 - 2:01pmHi, just like to say thanks for all the feedback here - it's all very useful. Some specific points:
* "The magazine has been dumbed down" I am not sure I completely agree with that. What we have done is make it more accessible, and appeal to a wider audience. The topics covered are still of interest to any reader
* "I miss the free software" We do still include software on the disc, though nowhere near as much. The software we are including complements the features and tutorials. We are not just going to shovel a lot of shareware on there. I appreciate that many people are resistant to change. It is natural, especially for a long established magazine. Pretty much every time a magazine is redesigned there are a host of people who don't like it. Rest assured that we are taking note of all you have to say, and maybe there is some way of accommodating your requests that don't disagree with the core focus of the magazine. Please keep it coming.

revived45 - 30 June 2008 - 5:46pmwell that's one way to deal with all the people who dared to critisise the new look magazine.
Re-design the web site and whipe out everyone that registered in the last couple of days!
There were over 37 responses, All critical on the new magazine, then Abracadabra , re launch the website and we are down to 17.
also we had to re-register. Come on Team pull your finger out

This really is the last
PS - 30 June 2008 - 5:49pmThis really is the last straw.
If you were trying to get rid of me after 8 years, then it's worked!

King_Drax_I - 30 June 2008 - 6:04pmNick, your reply is like an Ebay reply. Sorry, but that's the feel of it.
And - now they've changed the forums too! What's happening??
Just had to register again
len - 30 June 2008 - 6:11pmJust had to register again as "len" as user name not valid although I used it on 23rd June to criticise in this thread. Have I been struck off for that?
No matter I have cancelled anyway. Still open to suggestions for best alternative.
How strange, 6 days of posts
pca_possum - 30 June 2008 - 6:15pmHow strange, 6 days of posts have mysteriously vanished from this thread !
Anyway, I expressed my opinion by phoning Future Publishing and cancelling my subscription.
If it ain`t broke don`t fix it !
Old Bob - 30 June 2008 - 6:19pmOnce, PCA was the only decent pc magazine about. Now, the new look has changed that. Don`t think I`ll renew my subscription.
Where's Nick's reply?? Oh
geofftswin - 30 June 2008 - 8:04pmWhere's Nick's reply??
Oh yeah - it's halfway down the page inbetween newer and older posts - where I can easily find it.
Glad I cancelled my subscription to PCA now. If the attitude of the staff of PCA is mirrored across other Future titles, then I can see them become PAST publishing very quickly, as this forum will not be tolerated by readers of other magazines.
Truth is rarely pure, and never simple
Well, I've just cancelled my
PS - 1 July 2008 - 8:32amWell, I've just cancelled my subscription, along with many others it would seem.
I've now got about 100 issues of the mag which continue to provide me with a wealth of information.
Issue 187 is about to go where it belongs, in the shredder.
Hi,
Nick Veitch - 1 July 2008 - 9:45amHi,
Once again, I would like to let you know that we are reading your comments.
You may feel that PCA is no longer the magazine for you, and choose to cancel your subscription or not buy any more issues. That's your choice, and I quite understand it. We haven't deliberately removed any negative comments, i believe from our web services department that some of the posts got 'lost' during the transition between hosts.
The core goal of PCAnswers, to help people do more and understand more about their PCs is still the same, although we have a different approach. I believe, with the Explained section, the new focus on real practical skills and tips and with the Video tutorials (which takes A LOT more effort, time and money to produce than the old coverdisc), that PCA Answers represents good value for money. The question for you is whether it is worth YOUR money. Well, only you can answer that. But this is a forum, and everyone is entitled to their opinion.
I suggest that we move this discussion to one of the new forums, Magazine feedback.

Where are all of you that approve of the new style magazine?
can someone post a link to the thread with your comments?

New Mag
MLegendS - 1 July 2008 - 7:54pmI was one of the users who 'got lost' so to speak and had to re-register. I have only one thing to say about that.
Nick you shouldn't treat your readers like that, otherwise they soon won't be your readers. I suspect that, given the new format of the magazine they aren't the kind of audience you are trying to attract. The new look of the mag is something that may appeal to my wife. Sound advice has been replaced with fashion accessories and money saving tips.
As for the troubleshooting section on 'Help I've Dropped My Laptop', well if this happens the first thing most people do isn't consult a flowchart. They just hand it to their husbands to fix.
I've made it to 187 but will I see 200? I don't know.
at long last a PCA web site
pca_jdavidhart - 5 July 2008 - 9:54pmat long last a PCA web site that works with ie7. i do agree with most about the mag i to have cancelled subs but the web site much improved. well done.
