Problem with pull out section.

One more problem with the magazine although it be a minor one.

When punching holes into the pull out section some of the holes go through some of the text, it easy to determine what the word is but if PC Answers is looking for perfection then you should know about this problem.

Hi Jo, I just tried it on a

Hi Jo,

I just tried it on a shelf copy (not an early), if you use the punch guide, it's fine, it should miss all the text on the last few pages, but if you use the hole punch's default distance, indeed it overlaps.

Regardless it goes through the double page screengrabs, but we accounted for that. Thanks for letting us know though.

What was the rationale

What was the rationale behind the pull-out sections anyway?

They've been tried before, by magazines including PCA and they always seem to get scrapped after about 3 issues due to them not actually being what people want.

It seems to me that PCA is trying to reinvent itself as the old Computer Upgrade magazine which launched a few years back and was then subsumed into PCA.

Hi Scott, you must have ex ray eyes because with my Metal hole punch there is no way I can see the target marks, I would not have mentioned it if I could. Or do you have a transparent hole punch so you can see the marks, maybe you should give a hole punch away with the next issue.

Regards

John.

Hi John,

Hi John,

You might want to patent the transparent hole punch idea.

In a way you are right, I have an old hole punch at home that is basically impossible to aim with. However there are smaller ones in which you can see where you're going to punch through.

The big problem we have is that there isn't a set standard for hole punch, there are no regular measurements to follow. However I have a handy solution for you, it's a little Blue Peter, but what the hay!

Grab some blu-tack (anything that's a putty substance) and a pencil, pop the tack under the marking and on the top side, push the pencil through. Instant accurate holes.

Well again, correct, in the past PCAnswers has done pull outs etc. But this time we think we have the right idea. The pull out is almost like a seperate entity in itself. It's a complete manual to an application or service. If readers pull these out and keep them they could in effect create a sort of application manual bible.

We don't intent to stop the pull out, so it should stand the test of time.

Just A Question

If the pull out guide is meant to be an addition to the mag - why has it got page numbers?

or will these guides be in the mag every issue in the same place?

Just my current copy of PC Answers is looking decidely thin as it is!
