I just got my HP Pavilion laptop back from Comet after the speakers stopped working. Before sending it off I used the HP Recovery discs to restore the factory settings (and get rid of any private data).

I've re-installed all my programs and my Outlook and Firefox backups along with my data / photos etc.

I started using Firefox 3 and have reconfigured my Belkin wireless router so my internet and Xbox Live are all working.

I can surf the net and access most sites but when I try to get onto Hotmail I just get a blank screen, no error message, nothing. The PC Answers site is very slow loading too and I can't get Airliners.net to show up either (Yeah I know I'm sad!).

Anyway, I ran Spybot and deleted about a dozen ad-cookies (after 2 days too!).

It still isn't happy so if someone could have a look at this log and let me know if anything sticks out as potentially causing the problem I'd really appreciate it.

Please note that I am unable to provide detailed instructions as the PC Answers forum software does not allow bbcode.

1) HijackThis is out of date. Delete the copy you have and download/install the latest version from http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe

2) Java is out of date. Download the latest and save it to your Desktop - it's the fourth on the list here: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Then, using Add/Remove Programs, uninstall ALL versions of Java. Using WIndows Explorer, delete \Program Files\Java folder.

Double-click jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install Java.

3) Run HijackThis and post a fresh log.

Before doing any of this create a restore point on your computer

The length of this list tells you why windows takes so long to boot. You have a lot of things starting up that you do not need running all the time.

Uninstall Symantec Norton - my experience of this is that it is resource hungry, slows your system down and has unexplainable effects on your surfing experience. To do this cleanly you will need to download the Norton uninstaller program from the Symantec site. The built in uninstall leaves to much behind and can cause problems.

I assume that you have installed this to replace Zone Alarm and AVG that you had on your machine previously.

It may be Zone Alarm that was causing your browsing problem. Rarely it can be a bit of a pain but generally it's protection is top notch - as good as the ones you pay for. Again the process is to uninstall it, clean your registry to remove all traces of zone alarm and then install it again.

Also the early versions of AVG 8 free had bugs which have now been fixed and given the dates of your post this could well be the cause of your problem.

As you can see there is a lot to be removed. If you uninstall norton first this list will reduce considerably for a start.

What is left is that you have programs relating to Itunes, acrobat, java, ipod, lightscribe labelling, quicktime, Nvidia, messenger running all of the time on your computer which slows it up and uses memory.

These programs will start when you want them to by double clicking on the icon on your desktop. You do not need them going all of the time in the background.

You will need to create a new home page in internet explorer because this process will remove the existing one.

Before doing any of this create a restore point on your computer.

The result should be a faster boot time and a quicker computer.

I would also recommend "Advanced Windows Care 3" from Majorgeeks.com to keep your computer tuned up and running faster. It is free but will fix more problems than the ones you have here automatically.

Then try out your surfing again and see if you can get on the sites you want to.
