Homepage Keeps Changing

I cannot stop my homepage changing no matter what I try. I want my homepage to be www.bbc.co.uk/news but internet options keeps changing it to http:// runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx this brings you to the homepage of Internet Explorer 7 and asks you to choose your settings etc. It is driving me mad to see this site keep coming up. I have changed my home page settings so many times I now give up. I know it's an old chestnut but I would appreciate any advice on how to stop this happening. It even changes my homepage when my homepage is still currently listed in internet options.

I had this problem a while

Scott Ewart's picture

I had this problem a while back, but here's the solution I found and it appears there's a more automated approach also.

You're in need of the Run Once Remover. Alternatively you could try the IE8 beta (I wouldn't advise that though, it seems a tad buggy to me. Or if you want a customisable browser at the cost of RAM usage - Firefox.

Here's the old method, but that involves editing your registry manually. If you want to try that here's how:

  • Go to Start > Run
  • Enter "regedit" (without quotation marks) and hit "ok"
  • browse to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Main
  • Change the values of RunOnceHasShown and RunOnceComplete to 1

I'd only do this if you're confident about editing your registry, otherwise use the links above.

Microsoft Updates

Having downloaded the latest updates from Microsoft which is service pack 3 from 2 I seem to have problems. Is it vital I download these updates or can I ignore them ? My PC seems fine till I download this update. I have done a System Restore to get back to service pack 2. I have also tried the runonce.msn remover over and over to try and stop my homepage changing but I'm stuck with it. Anyone else not been successful using it I wonder ? malcwilkes
