PCA Magazine has gone down hill

As per subject.. PCA has gone down hill and hit the bottom! Since relaunch (issue 187) PCA has gone terrible.

I've been with PCA since issue 1, I keep stacks of mags for reference, each one I can see the issue number and some contents on the spine, but this new style makes this impossible now.

The content has gone all cheap, nasty and just flashy.

The DVD is just gimmicky.

The articles seem way too basic (for PC savvy users) and just seem to be cut down versions of articles that appeared in previous issues.

PCA used to always strike a good balance between users experience levels, but now PCA seems to have abandoned their regular (more experienced) readers in favour of new PC users/beginners.

I'm sorry to say after all these years I think it's time PCA and I parted company :(

Also, this new style forum is not a patch on the previous one.  Why do people mess with things trying to fix what isn't broken!

Is it possible to cancel a subscription mid term and get a partial refund or should I just let it lapse?

New-look PCA

I totally agree with SpongeBob! But he hasn't noticed that the cover disc is NOT a DVD anymore!

PCA are now giving us a measly CD which is only HALF FULL! Compare that to the DVD which was packed full of useful software. The CD is useless & very cheapskate of PCA.

Yet, they still expect us to pay £5.99 for the mag which has far fewer pages than before! PCA usd to have 148 pages, then gradually reduced to 130 & now ONLY 114 pages!!

PCA is no longer value for money! Which is why I'm cancelling my subscription.

Is it possible to cancel a subscription mid term and get a partial refund or should I just let it lapse?

You certainly can SpongeBob, as I and many others have done.

Why continue to pay for this rubbish?

"new PCA magazine

I fully endorse the comments made, the new mag might be much clearer to read and simpler in presentation and style, however it is now pretty basic in content and notably "dumbed down" in comparison to prior content and style. It appears more like a "how to use Windows" mag than one for reasonably experienced users.

If this is the "new" PCA, I will be migrating to something else, possibly Computer Active, to keep up with the info and articles I came  to rely on as always provided best by the "old" PCA.

At last!

I wondered when someone was going to address this point.

Allowing for the production costs of both the magazine and the Video thingy (Which IMHO doesnt in the slightest bit match the previous Powerdiscs), I've noticed my favorite mag has slowly crept up in price in the last few issues.

So what am i getting for my Six Gold Coins? (*)

Tips, yes i'll agree they're still there, but there's less of them - videos on a disc do not make a good reference source, as when more of these discs come in to my possession i'll have to trawl through them to find the tutorial! (and again, any student will tell you they give you some sort of notes in a tutorial)

The new Update section - take half of the old reviews section and splice it with the news pages - give it a fresh lick of ink and a new typeface and you've got update....this wouldn't have been so bad if only there wasn't another Ad in the section on nearly every alternate page.....Articles Please!, Tutorials, How to's and (perhaps even) projects. good heavens, if push came to shove you could ask for reader contributions (and yes, im volunteering!)

Skip Past Yet Another Ad and there's four pages of internet stuff, groovy, this was actually another example of where the mag goes in the right direction - The tutorial section was good as well (Although somebody tell me (Perhaps the Prod.ed) why there was a need to number a pull out section? - It reminded me of PC Upgrade! (ooh, that was naughty! promise i wont do that again.:))

One redeeming feature was the how to section - a simple way of keeping readers happy would be to incorporate a few tutorials from the disc on to here so that we could use them side by side when doing the tutorials (and as part of the mag please! not as a 'free gift' as if we're not getting something we've already got!), Again this was a Good Section , lets have more of it (and get back to the 130 page mark)

Skip past yet another ad and we come to Tested, which looks like the reviews section, Not bad..So Again a Further tick in the box :)...Only we come back to my first point, and here i ask a valid question, why was this section broken up and rebranded in the first place? and what happened to Hardware Upgrades (and Dont Try This at Home!)

In a previous post i said the new magazine was a step in the right direction, having read some posts on here i took a second look and its looking decididly lightweight (No doubt the weight's headed to PC Plus!!!*)

And on that note....can we have some old favorites back please? You have Dan Grabham on the Hit & Miss Column (Which used to be a page?!) Can we have some contributions from him and others like him!

If it ain't broken.....Dont try to Fix it!!!

Believe it or Not, I've been with PC Answers from the very beginning when it was, plainly and simply a magazine of useful projects and tips - at the start i seem to remember there was no coverdisc - then it went thru rebrand after rebrand till we reach the point where we are today - Basically, price (and thanks to cuts in space) and adverts have gone up whilst page count (and due to a change in typeface, word count) have fallen dramatically.

Can we have some of the old pc answers style back please?

* BTW, My copy of PCA has gone up to £6.00 with all these new changes - Along the same price of PC Plus (which is bigger and offers more content/CDs etc) - are loyal readers of this mag subsidising its sister magazine?

Yes But....

Ah yes! for existing subscribers you can cancel mid term and get a refund of unsent copies..............BUT

just look at page 28 of issue 188.

In the small print, if after 6o days you decide you don't like it you are lumbered because you are in a 12 month contract.

My subs run out in September, and after many years I will be canceling.

Another point to note is that you have to contact them to cancel otherwise they just take another years subscription out of your account without warning.

PCA staff appear to be burying their heads in the sand and ignoring all those that have aired their dis-approval of the new style magazine.

Their letters page glosses over the complaints and does not promise any retreat.

Also they still haven't found and reposted all those 'LOST' posts that disappeared when they altered the web site.  How convenient!

Regards,

Bob, middlesbrough

Hello All, The PCAnswers

Scott Ewart's picture

Hello All,

The PCAnswers team are reading all the posts on the forum and taking all comments and emails seriously. Your concerns are being heard.

These 'LOST' posts are indeed lost, in the time it took for the DNS to refresh people were posting on the old forums, we can't recover them now as the two were synced prior to the migration. Regardless if someone want to repost their comment/concern they are more than welcome. We're no trying to hide or spin opinions, just take a look at this section of the forum; even as the bed of negativity it is about the new design, everyone is entitled to their opinion. So please - no conspiracy theories about the team censoring reader views Smile - we have no desire to do that.

Regarding subscriptions, you are best contacting My Favorite Magazines about that. I'm pretty sure we do not instantly renew subscriptions without any notification/consent regardless.

Can't comment on the non DD

Can't comment on the non DD subscriptions, but when I signed up (and have now cancelled), it was for a direct debit, and I never received any correspondence about it being renewed at any time - the DD simply went out every 3 months.

Future do seem to have a funny thing with their Direct Debits, as when I cancelled, I was advised to cancel my DD with the bank, but I was only cancelling this subscription - not those to other magazines and only 1 Direct Debit exists between my account and Future Publishing.

DD

Scott,

I can assure you that for the last 5 years PCA have DD my account every Sept. for the next year's subscription without warning  me or sending  me any notification or receipt for having done so.

As I've always been happy with the magazine (until now) I have just let it ride.

So unless you know differently I will have to take positive action to cancel before the renewal date.

Bob,

Middlesbrough

It's the same here. The DD

It's the same here. The DD comes straight out of our account, no emails or phone calls.

You get good months were the mag is a joy to read and other months were a 5 min skim is all it's worth.

I have not been impressed with it of late.

Concern?

Scott,

With all due respect, do me a favour and nip down to your archive department will you?

There you will find a quality magazine, full of all the tips and tutorials and projects there once was in your publication more informative detail and yes, a program or two (and also, there was a few more pages in it too!!!)

I am, of course, referring to issue 186, the issue before we entered this brave new world of video tutorial

the argument that previous powerdiscs were full of broken software and demos just doesn't wash with me (and i suspect, with other members of this forum).

You've already had a valid suggestion from me vis a vis programs i'd like to see on the powerdisc....but given this months Hit & Miss Column....here's another.  B4 the brave new world we call video, there used to be at least 1 full program on the disc which tied in with a project and also a helpful library of open-source programs - which were occasionally updated on a month to month basis.

I Know the GIMP Graphics program appeared on issue 187s disc, but how's about a return from Scribus and Open Office???

The latest editions of both these fine (and free) pieces of software are just two examples of open-source software now available, so why aren't they on the coverdisc?

Or will i be seeing a free office suite/Publishing Package in forthcoming issue?   (I hope so! a nice piece of software from Serif / <Anybody Else> would come in useful with a nice bit of tutorials in the magazine)

(Im Returning to reality, as i've already seen the 'no turning back' stuff on here!)

and please, if you persist in putting in pull out sections in the mag can you number them seperately??? - it just makes my current copy look thinner!

Sad decline of PCA

to the PCA Team:

I really hope for your sakes you have got it right - but I think you will be losing a large slice of your loyal customer base.    I was drawn to PCA originally because it  assumed its readership was intelligent and also possessed a sense of humour.  I stayed with it because it was informative on News, and new technologies hardware and software and had at a quirky sense of humour   - I even found the typos entertaining.  This mag had character. In the time I since I first subscibed  when I started as a novice user I have joined the IT industry and worked in software and hardware support and then in ICT Service Management.  In all this time the magazine catered for my interests.  Only in the last two issues has it failed to appeal.

I realise that you have made a decision to appeal to a new readership - but to someone who has already shelled out for a years subscription, they must feel as if they have been mugged.

Yours disapppointedly,

Oliver

Hi Inkdrop, Again all valid

Scott Ewart's picture

Hi Inkdrop,

Again all valid points, and there's no doubt (as with any redesign) that a risk has been taken.

In the time I've been disc editor (granted it has only been about 40 issues or so), I've always made software packs based around the issues, an updated (yet out of date by the time it hits the shelf) essentials and security section and sourced at least 4 full product per issue. Some of these programs have been used and ocasionally I've been emailed some thanks but I can guarantee that mostly I have heard the following comment:

"The Disc is and always will be a coaster"

We've had questionaires done and the majority of users say they found the content useless, rather than cull it and send me on my merry way, we desided to take a chance and give the disc a direct usage.

The disc now works as follows:

10 "How to..." video tutorials by the How To.. section authors
1 Explained section masterclass video
X number of applications that line up with the issue content.

Nothing more, nothing less. That way it's directly tied in. We're hoping that this will work and indeed over time we will be covering many applications etc. Does the new disc and video tutorials really do nothing for you? Do you feel that full software would make it more worthwhile?

A Serious Disservice

Hi Scott,

I've read your reply and, to be quite honest, im a little hurt!

(Dont panic...i'll get over it (SOBS!!!)Laughing)

lets look at this from my point of view, First of all I have NEVER (please take note of the capital letters) used one of your CDs as a coaster, look back at a previous reply and you will find i've been getting the CD Version since issue 37 - upon my first purchase of a CD ROM Drive.

Up to and including change to a DVD Format and Upto the new Videodisc there has always been something of interest on there. I understood the introduction of the cardboard sleeve but there's always been room for A Full Working Version of a piece of useful software on the Disc.  Your Best Issue was when Mr Dobson was the Disc Ed - Lotus Smartsuite - Fantastic!

You Commented on the facts that Microsoft and all would not entertain the introduction of an Office Suite/<Anything Else>.  If that were the case I wouldn't have purchased a Full Copy of MS Office (Home Ed.) from them after using such a disc - where did i get a copy of evaluation version......? Try your Sister Office (PC Plus!).  Another example is when the magazine bundled Technet with the regular coverdisc - I forget the issue number - this also had a microsoft demo (Publisher, I Believe).  Again, this gave me the opportunity to try out the software and give an informed decision on what to buy - FYI I purchased a Serif Product which i've stuck with and upgraded contantly now upto & inc V.11.

BTW....To Knock previous disc editors is a little surprising!

I dont mind the Video tutorials, but they've taken over the disc, the balance is completely turned head over heels and its hightime some quality software came back to the pages of this magazine....im not going into personal choices but again i did mention some Windows versions of Linux Favorites, Namely Openoffice and Scribus...the Hit & Miss Praises from Nick V on Opensource threw a whiff of hope that these Might make an appearance....though i'll be watching to see whats on the next issue.

No Video?....I Never suggested that and im also miffed you make such an implication.  Return to a DVD Format (probably via the use of the increase in 'production costs' to the price of the mag) will give you the best of both worlds

And YES....More FULL Software Please...I Dont Care if its 1 yr old or a couple of editions out of date - If it works in XP it'll work in Vista (I know, as i tested a copy of MS Office 4.2 on here and it works!*)

 * Why did i test 4.2 when I have Office 200* ? Quite simple - so i can run it alongside some legacy hardware!

(Additional thought added on 30/7/08)

Just read Mr Anderton's view on the current situation, im satisfied with the response, but as inflation is down and in that case costs, when am i likely to see a price drop in the cost of purchasing this mag, or does the videodisc point us to another outlet....the Future Broadcasting Channel ???!!!!

Please don't get me wrong

Scott Ewart's picture

Please don't get me wrong Inkdrop, I wasn't knocking previous editors or the work they have done. But sadly in the last few years it's become increasingly hard to get "headline" full software. With the advent of the internet magazines lost a huge amount of bargaining power. Granted some companies see the advantage, but others would rather put effort into their websites and promote their product on downloads.com

I think the best full products Future Publishing titles have sourced in the last few years are: Camtasia Studio, Snag It, NetObjects Fusion, FloorPlan 3D, The whole Serif Range, Adaware Plus (one year) and a few others.

We add open source suites to each issue based on the content, so that's always going to happen. But the full software idea might be worth discussing.

Hmmm.....

Lets just say, Im NOT Leaving PC Answers as a reader, but i'll be keeping an eagle eye on whats on there!

And Yes! (I Know im repeating myself) If i see a Full piece of Useful software on the disc i might just be happy.

BTW....

Why is it PCA has a videoCD and your sister mags have DVDs?

I think your subscribers deserve a valid answer.....

At least have the decency of filling the VideoCD.

Video Disc

Christian Hall's picture

Hi Inkdrop - the new PCAnswers Video Disc was put onto CD to cater for the magazine videos we are making and the accompanying software where relevant. By saving a bit in using a CD instead of a DVD we are able to produce the 11 or so videos every issue which costs us expensive studio time to get made. The mags you're talking about don't have these tutorials and so are able to stick with a DVD. We do realise that there's been a bit of empty space on the disk though so we will look to fill this up with useful software - we may even covermount additional disks for special issues.

Videodisc..Pt2

Its approaching half past one on Friday Morning so i'll try my best to keep this brief.

First of all Christian, thank you for answering my post, the promise of more useful stuff on the 'new' videocd has lightened my mood in the light of less content for more money (Read my post to Mr Anderton on that one :) )

I do though have a small query in regards to your answer and its this,

given the talents of all the members of your team - i include your experts and contributors in that equation - couldn't your videos be made and produced in - house? - this would cut the expenses in production and give you money to use elsewhere.  im sure the professionalism of your journalists will shine through?

New Look PCA

There was a time when I looked forward to my postman bringing me my latest copy of PCA, but sadly not any more, when I obtained my first copy of PCA on a visit back home I was impressed with the quality of the content of both the magazine and the CD/DVD's especially if you compaired them to the German ones and I decided to subscribe despite it being twice as expensive as in the UK. Unfortunately since the new look has shown itself I find the magazine has deteriated to what I would call a beginners magazine for 10 to 15 year olds. The discs are not worth publishing, I tried the first two but now I just place them straight in the recycle bin as they are a waste of plastic. I shall allow my subscription to run its course however I shall not be renewing it unless it obtains some of its past glory. Sorry Mr. Editor

K.J.

I, too, have purchased PCA

I, too, have purchased PCA from issue 1 and subscribed when I moved to Ireland and then France. I am disgusted with the decline in quality of the magazine and have not renewed my subscription this year. Fortunately my French is good enough to be able to buy the French magazines and though I shall miss PCA I won't miss the new look magazine as I was already missing the old version.
