Re: Power Supply Unit cleaning info

Hi

Regarding issue 188 "Clean your PC" you forgot to mention safety concerns when cleaning a PSU:

I would suggest for safety's sake leaving it unplugged from the mains overnight first.
Then it is likely that the High-Voltage capacitors have discharged, at least to a reasonably safe level. avoid touching and capacitors or cables as this can lead to a very nasty shock.

I agree 100% and would

I agree 100% and would rather unqualified people didnt open PSU's at all. The magazine warned about "sharp edges" on the case but i think touching a capacitor could be more serious. I think the advice should've been better researched as its the more novice user that would follow these guides and with no mention of these capacitors holding their charge a user could easily touch them and in an event of an accident I feel the blame would fall directly into PCAnswers lap.

While reading a friends

While reading a friends issue couldnt believe you were telling people who probally dont know any better to actually open the PSU, could you be anymore careless?

Buying a new PSU is far better then opening one up and trying to clean it.

You should print a warning in the next issue, unless you want your readers to perform this stupid act and put themselfs in danger.

Maybe you should get someone who knows what they are doing a little better next time!
