Whilst this is a really good idea, and although I have only watched 1 video off the 2nd disc, I feel I must comment.
I watched the one about Setting up Wi-Fi, it was all very good showing how to plug everything in etc, and unless there is a follow up I have not gotten around to watching then forgive me, BUT; - what about the software side of things??
Everytime I connect I have to go to the cmd line and typr ipconfig /all, then ipconfig /dnsflush followed by ipconfig /release and finally ipconfig /renew and eventually it tells me it has made contact.
Currently I have one machine that this all works on hunky dory, but that is when it is hardwired in. As soon as I try to go wireless the problems start. I do all of the above re. ipconfig, and although the icon tells me I am connected Internet Explorer refuses to connect me to the internet, I can ping etc but just cannot connect via wireless.
So this is an area which needs addressing.

Thanks for your thoughts on
Christian Hall - 24 July 2008 - 12:16pmThanks for your thoughts on our Video Disc. As you say the Wi-Fi video is really an introduction in how to generally get setup in your home. The problems you are experiencing appear quite unique and we would love to investigate your problem further, can you provide details of the make/model of router, PC details and who your ISP is?
Christian The router is a
philiphales - 25 July 2008 - 7:56amChristian
The router is a Linksys WRT150N and is about 2 months old.
THe PC is a Compaq Small Form Factor D500, about 3/4 years old.
Virginmedia is the ISP.
One thing I cannot understand also is when I first configured it I think the address of the Routers Software was 192.168.1.1, but when I enter this I can no longer get into the configuration. Also I have noticed that the IP address in ipconfig seems to have changed from what it was when I first set it up.
I was thinking that maybe I should try re-setting the Router to see if it defaults back to the original IP address. Though I thought these were fixed.
I downloded (I think it was from microsoft) an update for Explorer (though I thought I was running the latest as I have XP service pack 3) which allows me to run a diagnostic, and gives a very comprehensive log.
What I cannot understand is why the icon in the bottom RHS tells me I am connected, but IE just will not get me logged on.
I will try and find some time over the weekend to try everything again, and make notes of the problems I am experiencing, the trouble is you tend to have a go at it for an hour and keep meeting dead ends and give up, then a couple of weeks go by and you find time to try again, but what you tried before is forgotten.
I have the desktop on the floor in the lounge and is hardwired into the Router with no problem. However, my partner is threatening to throw it in the bin 'cos it all looks a mess. Upstairs I have a new laptop running Vista, which I managed to set up without any problems.
Ultimately I would like the desktop upstairs too so that I have my own little network with printer sharing etc. Then if I am watching TV and need to access the Internet I can just go upstairs and get the laptop.
Once I get them both up and running I wanted to change the configuration in the Router so that it would only communicate with my computers through the MAC address, which I believe is the absolute safest way ignoring WEP and all other forms of security. And unless someone actually came into my house and obtained my MAC address then hacked their registry and changed the MAC address in their own machine there is no way they would be able to use my Wi-Fi.
Please ask any more questions with regard to my problems because it would make an excellent Video if you could take my problems and show how to set-up any and all software to overcome any problems folk may experience.
Regards Philip
Philip, we'll look into this
Christian Hall - 25 July 2008 - 10:32amPhilip, we'll look into this some more, but as you say you should try resettting the router and setting up a network from scratch - I've had to do this a few times on Vista becuase my Negear loses settings sometimes. Also, try downloading the latest firmware which might solve a few issues. Always take a look at the forums for the router in question though, as many a firmware update has caused more problems than its solved - people are pretty quick to spot issues and post about them.
