VISTA INSTALLS PRINTER IN "OTHER DEVICES"

Hi,

I'm on x64 Vista and it keeps installing the printer part of my hp psc1210 in "other devices" - it installs the scanner part correctly in "imaging devices".

Vista tells me it has the correct drivers and the HP website says Vista has the right drivers so they don't make any available for download.

I wouldn't mind it being in "other devices" if I could find a way of operating it from there.

Does anyone have any ideas please? Thanks.

When you say it installs in

When you say it installs in other devices, do you mean in the Device Manager? Have you looked for a folder called HP in the Start>All Programs list or what happens when you click the Start>Printers tab?

If it appears in neither of these, then I would uninstall it, reboot and reinstall,  see if that helps.

Hi Tom,Yes that is how it

Hi Tom,

Yes that is how it shows up in device manager - it does not show up in printers . If I attempt to print a file, there are no printers. There is no HP in start> AllPrograms and when I open the printers folder, it is empty.

Vista obviously doesn't recognise it as a printer and I can find no way of accessing it. This is strange as Vista locates the hp1200 series drivers and says it has installed successfully.

I have  uninstalled numerous times and tried every combination of restarting , turning the printer off then on , unplugging the and replugging the usb lead  - every time it reinstalls as " other devices ". The scanner part seems to work fine though.

Any ideas  will be gratefully received

Hi,GOT IT ! Print spooler

Hi,

GOT IT !  Print spooler needs to be running while a printer is being installed or it doesn't realise it's a printer - bizarre.  Installation successful.

Print spooler was set to manual and not running - do we need to have that running all the time? I only print occasionally.

Thanks

That's strange, the Print

That's strange, the Print Spooler service is set to Automatic by default. Probably better to leave it at Auto,  I doubt if it uses much resources.

Hi Tom, Yes I had turned it

Hi Tom,

Yes I had turned it to manual and I have done so again - I just turn it on for the odd time I need to print - now the drivers are installed it's fine.

Thanks
