The Gimp

Hi

 Can anybody help me? I have a Pavilion a608uk Desktop ATI radeon 9250 Graphics card and 1024Mb memory. I run Windows XP pro and SP3. I have carried out all the instructions for installing the Gimp from the disc. When I left click the icon, the Tip of the day comes up and 2 items open in the taskbar at the bottom, layers etc. and the Gimp

The only thing that shows on screen though is tip of the day. when you close that only the normal desktop  shows although the 2 items are still in the taskbar. I have tried restoring and maximizing but the gimp still does not show. Can anybody tell me what if anything I'm doing wrong.Undecided
