hi all, i am having a problem when trying to use internet on my pc, up until approx 5 weeks ago it was ok but now seems to take forever to open up a webpage using explorer, when i say slow it is approx 30 - 40 seconds which is an age when you are waiting on it and this is all the time everytime i try to navigate around, i am running xp fully up to date and norton as an antivirus which i also tried doing full scan but no faults found, i have defragged lately but again no difference, im wondering if there might be something norton or myself is not seeing in the pc, if i try opening up task manager whilst waiting system idle is 95- 97 percent, my antivirus subscription did expire and i did not realise for about a month and it was during this time it seemed to happen so i am worried, how can i check if norton is not picking anything up, i wrote this with work pc as i could not access pc answers at home [ gave up waiting]

Isitme - 22 August 2008 - 2:46pmOpen the Run box and type msconfig OK. Tick the button for Diagnostic Start up and reboot. If the time to start is reduced considerably, then some items in your Start up list are slowing things down. If this is the case, open msconfig again and tick the Selective Startup button. Click the Startup tab and go through the list and untick everything except your Security items. You will probably find that BT have put half a dozen items in there which are not really required, together with numerable other items from other installations which are not really required. Restart and compare the startup time. If you find that something is not working properly, just run msconfig again and retick it's item.
I would also advise you to uninstall Norton and use a lighter progam. Norton are famous for bring a PC to it's knees, epecially the older versions. The free versions of AVG8 and Avast do a very good job at catching viruii and Comodo and PCTools are very good free firewalls.
If you decide to uninstall Norton use their tool to remove it as it's uninstaller leaves bits all over the place. Available from http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

casper - 23 August 2008 - 7:12amthank you isitme, i will try it and post back
okay, i tried it and
casper - 23 August 2008 - 1:02pmokay, i tried it and it does make small difference, but start up is not the problem and is much and such the same as it has been, problem only seems to be when i try to use internet explorer then web pages seem to take ages to load, sorry if i did not make it clear in my first post
Connection speed
Isitme - 23 August 2008 - 2:32pmYou will have to check your actual internet connection speed, that is the most likely cause of a slow internet connection. Kitz's site will give you instructions on how to get your router stats, which includes your actual connection speed.
http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php
Your AV can also slow you down, that is why I recommended that you change it.
Another reason for slow connections is malware running on your PC. Open a Command Prompt and type netstat /a and hit enter. This will show you the amount of connections you have running on your PC. If you have a large number, more than 8-10, you probably have malware. You could try downloading and running http://www.superantispyware.com/ This will detect and remove most malware. After you have done this, run http://www.download.com/CCleaner/3000-2144_4-10315544.html to clean up any rubbish you have lying around in your PC.

Apologies
Isitme - 23 August 2008 - 2:43pmI don't know how I managed it but my first post to your query was in reply to a completely different thread.
You probably wondered what the reference to BT was about
, but I think my second post covers what you need.

Norton anti-virus
pca_GBH - 23 August 2008 - 3:17pmAs Tom has already said it is best to avoid norton antivirus altogether. It really hogs system resources and is nearly as bad as AOL software to get out of your system.
thanks both of you so far,
casper - 24 August 2008 - 9:22pmthanks both of you so far, after typing into cmd prompt i found i have 32 connections running, i have already run adaware and spybot which found a trojan and a heap of spyware, i also found out my security centre had been disabled so i have reenabled it [ probably why i never noticed my antivirus running out] i will probably get rid of norton but after using it for years trouble free and just paying 56 pound for next year i am loathe [ and too tight fisted] to get rid of it yet, i know and appreciate what you are saying about it using resources but in all the time i have used it it has never caused me to run this slow, i have tried clicking on spyware link you have posted but cannot seem to access it ie two green bars at bottom of screen after 5 minutes so i gave up but will try again and keep you posted
www.superantispyware.com
Isitme - 25 August 2008 - 10:47amJust type that in your address bar and it should take you there. I don't know why the link is not working on your machine, it may be a symptom of malware. If it still does not work, try starting in Safe Mode with Networking and try from there.

Briano - 29 August 2008 - 11:01pmHave you tried another browser? eg Firefox, Opera. See if it affects them too.
Straight after you boot in to windows open task manager. Then try to access the net and watch for anything starting to hog resources.

HijackThis
Isitme - 30 August 2008 - 12:42pmI definitely looks like you are infected. You could try downloading http://download.hijackthis.eu/HJTInstall.exe and create a log. Unfortunately the forum HJ section seems to have died, so what I would recommend is going here-
http://www.hijackthis.de/
and paste your log into the box and see what it says.
If this does not help, then I am afraid a full format and re-install may be required.

hijack this did show up some
casper - 7 September 2008 - 11:33amhijack this did show up some but deleting them made no difference im afraid so i went with the total reinstall , i had already saved all documents, photo,s, music, favourites and email settings etc when i first got an inkling something was seriously wrong so reinstall was undertaken only problem i had was i lost the wirless pci card driver disc so could not connect to internet and as it was cheapo card from a internet auction site drivers were not easily found so i bought a new card [ cheap anyway] and fitted that installed drivers and im up and running again , everything else seems okay, as i backed everything up onto an external hd everything i had before is easily accessible , so lucky escape i think, i have also ditched norton and have taken your advice to run avg8 free and i am impressed so far , a big thank you to all for advice especially isitme/ tom
AVG
Isitme - 9 September 2008 - 11:41amAfter running and recommending AVG for years, I found that the latest version, although it looks good, caused far too many problems and have ditched it. It has a problem with updating on some machines, it told me I did not have enough memory to update, not just occasionally, but almost every time it tried. I think Grisoft may be trying to push users on to their 'paid for' product as nothing seemed to be being done about it. Some find it is still OK but I didn't, so I am now using Avast4 Free, it seems to be working well and updates with no problems. If you do have problems with AVG, try Avast.
