Internet Security for Windows 2000

Due to age and infirmity ( of both myself and my PC ), I am still using Windows 2000 Pro with SP4.  Not being a Gamer, nor a big user of the Web, I don't wish to upgrade my kit, which is 7 years old ( MSI KT3 Ultra 2; AMD Athlon XP 1800; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD; Office 2000 Premium; Publisher 2000; Paint Shop Pro 5, etc.), hence reason I still run W2K.

From 1999 until October 2006, I ran Norton Systemworks + Norton Firewall, but then they stopped supporting W2K, so I changed to AVG7, with Comodo Firewall, but was not impressed, as the Firewall kept locking out the AVG updates ( I tried this combination again recently with AVG8 + Comodo, on with my mother's PC and it caused the same problems ).

I then tried various AntiVirus packages given away free with PCA and other PC mags, but was never impressed by any of  them, so last October, I bought Kaspersky Internet Security 7 ( for 3 PCs ).  Problem solved.

As my current package is due for replacement next month, I went looking for the latest version - KIS 2009 - but guess what???  Yes!  Kaspersky no longer supports Windows 2000, or so it seems.

Does anybody know of any product which still supports W2K and isn't a waste of space on my PC?  Preferably a complete Security package; not seperates, as with AVG/Comodo.

As I have 2 PCs and a Laptop, I need a multi-user package, otherwise it's going to cost me an arm and leg, which I can't justify.  And NO, I am not interested in upgrading to XP or Vista... Bill Gates is rich enough already.

I am surprised that AVG is

I am surprised that AVG is giving you a problem as I install that on all the machines I support.

However,

My second choice is PCTools that do free and paid for security suites

God doesn't play dice Does that mean I was supposed to be like this??

Avast

I have also had problems with AVG8 and now use Avast, it is compatible with all Windows from '95 to Vista, but not Servers. I use it with Comodo and it seems to work well. I am not really in favour of all in one solutions. Almost all of them seem to want to take over your system for their own use.

Security for W2K

Hi Dave

Thanks for the reply.  Think I'll give PCTools Free edition a try, to see how I get on with that.  If it works to my satisfaction, I'll go with the full product, as long as it ain't too expensive for my three units.

Cheers

Security for W2k

Hi Tom

Thanks for the reply and recommendation.  I'll give Avast a try, along with the other recommendation I got from Dave.  Not quite so sure about using Comodo again, but if the combination works OK for you, maybe it'll work OK for me, too.

As for all-in-one solutions, I never found Norton, nor Kaspersky, causing any problems with my system, but then, I'm not a Power User, nor a Gamer.

That said, I did try Panda Internet Security last year and also BitDefender 9 and they both caused problems, although it was mostly the way they worked and the updates, which I had issues with.

Cheers

Russ
