Slowing down my greedy PS3

Is it possible to stop my PS3 taking all the bandwidth of my Netgear DG834G wireless router.

When i am playing Warhawk online on my PS3 it takes all the bandwidth and makes it impossible for my other half to surf the net upstairs on our p.c.

We are using a Belikin 802.11g 54mbs dongle to connect the pc to the router and my PS3 is also connected wirelessly although could be hard wired to the router if i have to.

Please keep the replies fairly simple to match my knowledge.

I can access the settings to my router so no need to explain that if it's needed.

Oh and we are using Windows xp sp2 and Firefox browser if that helps.

I don't know about how to

I don't know about how to alter the allocation of bandwith, but have you tested your broadband speed?  Just where you plug the router into the phoneline and how your sockets are wired can make a huge difference to the connection speed.  Moving the router from an extension socket to th BT master socket can show a threefold increase in speed.

Test the speed, move the router then test again.  Remove the front of your BT master socket and plug the router into the BT test socket.  Check the speed again.

It depends on the version of the router you have, Version 4 and later support Quality of Service (QoS) which allows you to allocate bandwidth. Previous versions don't have this option.

Either way, I think Marrtin is correct. Playing games does not require a great deal of bandwidth, so if it is effecting browsing on another machine then you really need to look into it. Most broadband problems are caused by poor internal wiring, so do as suggested above and check your statistics from the Test socket.

One simply thing that can vastly improve a broadband connection is removing the bell or ring wire. Improvements of 15-50% are not unknown. This is basically what the famous BT iPlate does. If you want to try this remove the faceplate from your Master socket and take the wire off the #3 terminal. Do not disturb the wires on terminals 2 or 5, these at your main phone connections. If there is a wire on terminal 4, it is of no consequence, just leave it. Further reading on this as well as other advice can be found here-

Thanks folks but i pay for

Thanks folks but i pay for 8mb and i get speeds of 7.98mb.

When i launch the game it takes a lot of upload speeds aswell as download and virtually freezes the pc.

Think i'm gonna have to invest in a new router.

Anyone reccomend one for about 75 pounds..

PS3

Have you tried using ethernet for the PS?Try it and see how it goes. Alternately put the PC on ethernet, see if there is a difference.

It could be a wireless conflict that is causing the problem. If you have a download speed of nearly 8 Mb, you should have no problem with bandwidth. There are users with 2 consoles plus PCs who are able to connect without problems with less speed than that. Unless you are using P2P or Torrents at the same time you should not have a problem
