building a media pc

Hello people!

I wondered if you can help me. It has been a while since I posted here as I have been moving house a lot and have been out of the pc loop for a few months. In fact my PCAs actually get delivered to an address I don't reside at anymore!!

Anyway, to business. I have been asked by a friend to build him a media pc.

He wants it to be able to run his TV, record tv to disk as well as dvd, be able to connect it to the net etc and do emails. He will of course wanna put his music on it and photos too so it would need front facing USB and be able to conect with te stereo.

I have no idea where to start.

He has an Athlon 2700+ rig, with 1 GB of DDR and a socket A ATX mb (but cant remember make) The graphics card is probably a 9500 pro and the sound is onboard. It is in a normal tower case.

He has a max budget of 400 quid, but to be honest if we can use stuff from his old rig that would be appreciated. There is no need whatsoever to play games etc....It is just TV, net, music, vide and photos.

can anyone help me out here?

Thx

for a start a digital tv

for a start a digital tv card  with recording facilities (freeview i take it). a graphics card with tv out put then again the tv card might double up as graphics. check ebuyer .com. might have to update the mobo as Ram will have to go upto 2gbt. plus a big hard drive and a case with front usb. as for sound to normal steroe use mini jack to two phonos. don`t forget to upgrade the psu to 500 watts to drive this lot. thats just a idea what you are looking at. anything else look around for ideas. i use ebuyer.com very good.
