I'm using Win XP SP2 with Firefox 3 and have recently tried to change to a Belkin modem/router. Although it's supposed to be wireless i've been setting it up wired with a network cable. I've tried Belkin's support and both their guaranteed fixes didn't work!!
When I boot the computer,it boots in under 2 mins but the modem will not connect for 81/2 mins. Belkin say it takes a while for it to boot up but won't say how long. It seems excessive since the modem provided by Talktalk was ready when the computer was although I did resort to using a fixed URL for reliability.
As per instructions, I have now set it back to automatic URL but it is taking ages to connect. When it has connected, it is very good.
As instructed by Belkin support, I have disabled my software firewall, (Zone Alarm) which I was told was interfering with the hardware firewall. I've changed the network cable as instructed but neither have solved the slow boot.
Do these modem/routers always take so long to connect or could there be another problem? Or should I give up and revert to the original modem and firewall?
And I haven't even tried it wireless yet!
Any suggestions/help would be appreciated.

Router
Isitme - 17 October 2008 - 4:16pmDo you leave the router running and connected to the net? Routers are designed to be used like this. If you are starting it at the same time as the PC, it has to first sync with the exchange then negotiate a connection before it becomes available to the PC. This can slow the PC startup as it is looking for a network connection before it will open. If you are switching the router off, leave it running overnight and see if there is any improvement.

pca_lespaton - 18 October 2008 - 6:38pmMy 3-Com router is always switched off along with the PC and is booted up and connected to my ISP before the XP PC has completed booting. You have a problem somewhere.

Tom I've tried leaving it on

I've tried leaving it on but no difference. If the computer has been on for while and I don't use it all the time, the modem/router seems to go to sleep. switching it off/on or resetting it doesn't help. The only way to get it working again is to reboot the computer when it then restarts straight away.
I think LesPaton is right and I have a problem with the OS. I never managed to get SFC to restore the sys files, so I guess I must try a repair and if that doesn't work, reinstall the OS.
Thanks both, for your help and suggestions

Router
Isitme - 21 October 2008 - 3:38pmHave a look through the router settings and make sure there is not a setting enabled that turns it off after a period of non use. Also have a look at the network adapters properties to see if there is a setting to turn it off when not in use.
