DVD-RAM drive

In the past I used to drag and drop files from my PC hard drive onto DVD- RAM discs in my NEC DVD-RW ND-4550A RAM drive for backup purposes. I am currently trying to use Panasonic DVD-RAM discs for this purpose and can remember having used them in the past.

However, I am  encountering problems when I now try to do this. I get an error message saying "Cannot copy [filename]. Files on this CD-ROM drive are read only...."

I cannot remember whether I had to re-format these disks. However, when I try to do this I get further error messages from Windows XP telling me that formatting eas unsuccessful.

The NEC site does not seem to offer e-mail support. However, their FAQs say that their drive does not require a driver.
Confusingly, however Windows XP appers to have a Microsoft driver on it and warns that uninstallation of this will prevent the device from working properly.

Can someone help me please? At present I have a stack of useless disks!

DVD Ram

I think before you can format a RAM disk you have to disable CD/DVD writing on the drive. Strange, but if you don't, XP will try to format it as a RW, which will fail. It has to be recognised as a hard disk. Alternately you have to use 3rd party software like Nero or Roxio.

To disable CD writing, open My Computer, right click the disk icon and select Properties. Open the Recording tab and untick Enable Recording on this drive. Now put the RAM disk in and right click the icon and select Format. The disk should format and can then be used just like a hard disk.

Thank you very much for that. I also found that if I formatted it in my DVD recorder, XP would then recognise the disc as an entity that was capable of being formatted!

Anyway, my problem seems to have been solved. Many thanks again for your interest!
