You can set up routers via wireless as well...
and you can have the router on an extension cable and it will work fine.. you may have to ring the ISP or phone co. to up the gain on the line.
Most adsl connections when first plugged in is usually a line fault when first starting up - yes everyone ADSL i have set up there has been a line fault.
